Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State
says despite the economic recession in the country, the state has
recorded more Internally Generated Revenue in 2016 than it did in 2015.
According to the governor, as of December 16, 2016, Lagos had raked in N287bn IGR as against N268.2bn it generated in 2015.
Ambode, who spoke at a special evening
of music and camaraderie at the Lagos House, Ikeja, to usher in the
Yuletide, said the taxes paid by Lagosians had been judiciously used to
upgrade infrastructure and provide services.
The governor commended the taxpaying
residents of the state, saying their cooperation made it possible for
his administration to fulfil its electoral promises.
Speaking on the significance of the
event, which featured performances by evergreen musicians and was
attended by top political leaders, captains of industries, media
executives and members of the diplomatic corps, among others, Ambode
said the evening was principally to appreciate those that contributed to
the growth of the state during the year.
He said, “People have been saying that Lagos is working, but Lagos is only working because of the people who are seated here.
“The taxpayers are the ones giving us
the little energy that we have. Even though they say Nigeria is in
recession, somehow, Lagos has been able to do it and it is because
people are paying their taxes.
“So, we need to appreciate all the
people that have made this to happen and I felt one of the ways to go
about that was to invite our old celebrities that we seemed to have
forgotten and spend an evening with them.”
Some of the musicians that performed at
the event included Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Sir
Shina Peters, Lagbaja, Queen Salawa Abeni and Adewale Ayuba.
