News: Labour threatens indefinite strike from Friday
The United Labour Congress on Wednesday threatened that workers in the country would embark on an indefinite strike if the Federal Government failed to meet its demands by Friday (tomorrow).

The threat came barely two weeks after the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment responded to the workers through a letter, which the ULC said “largely failed to adequately address the critical issues raised in our demands.”

The union issued the strike threat after an emergency meeting of its National Administrative Committee, which was held jointly with the National Strike Committee in Lagos.

In a statement signed by the President, ULC, Joe Ajaero, the union urged Nigerians to take precaution and stock up necessities, saying, “The strike will be very effective as we hope to cripple all modes of transportation within the nation; ensure a total blackout nationwide; cut off petroleum product supplies; and disrupt banking operations, which will make life a bit more difficult for Nigerians.

“We regret these consequences on all of us, but we hope that these measures will help us create a nation that is better governed for the benefits of Nigerian workers and Nigerian masses.”

Ajaero said that the strike had become necessary having earlier issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government as a result of the decision of the Central Working Committee meeting of the congress on August 22, which expired on September 8, 2017.

He said that in view of the government’s rejection of the demands within the 14-day ultimatum, the ULC ordered an immediate issuance of a seven-day final strike notice, which would expire on Friday.

He added, “This course of action, though very painful to us at this time, is the only alternative available to us as we have exhausted all known peaceful processes towards an amicable resolution of the dispute.

“We, therefore, call on all genuine patriots to join hands in solidarity with us to urge the Federal Government and state governors to be kind enough to meet the demands of Nigerian workers and masses.”

The demands of the union include the immediate payment of all arrears of salaries owed workers at all levels of government without exception.

Ajaero added that other demands were that “the Federal Government honours its 2009 agreement with university lecturers under the umbrella of ASUU quickly and commences negotiations with them on new issues so that our universities will re-open.

“The roads leading to all the petroleum refineries and depots nationwide be repaired by the government to avoid the present carnage, wastage of products and properties on these roads.

“That the government should demand that the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment set up a task force immediately to carry out factory inspections as most of our factories are death traps.”

The workers are also demanding an immediate review of the privatisation of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, among others.

LASU Sacks ASUU Chairman, Vice Chairman And 15 Other Lecturers For Malpractices -

LASU Sacks ASUU Chairman, Vice Chairman And 15 Other Lecturers For Malpractices -

The Lagos State University (LASU) Governing Council has dismissed 15 Academic Staff, including the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) of the institution, over various malpractices.

The dismissed LASU-ASUU Chairman and Vice Chairman were Isaac Oyewunmi and Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu.

LASU spokesperson, Ademola Adekoya, said in Lagos on Friday that the institution also dismissed two non-academic staff and demoted two others.

Among others dismissed for various financial and academic misconduct were Olatoye Raji, Olugbenro Odofin, Adebowale Ademeso, John Adeogun, Scholastica Udegbe and Olufemi Soyeju.

Other were Olawale Raimi, Ademola Adesina, Shamisudeen Badmus, Christiana Obagbuwa, Emmanuel Asapo, Lateef Salami, Olubukola Oyeniya and Fatimat Bakare.

Mr. Adekoya said that the decision to dismiss the staff was taken at LASU 115th Governing Council Meeting on Thursday.

“Pursuant thereto, the Governing Council with immediate effect dismissed 15 members of the academic staff, two members of non-academic staff, and sanctioned two others for different acts of misconduct.

Mr. Oyewunmi was dismissed for demanding N50, 000 from students while Mr. Adeyemi-Suenu was sacked for “unilaterally altered the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw by Senate’’

Mr. Adekoya said the council established that Mr. Oyewunmi demanded N50, 000 from 2003 modular year students of Political Science Education on the sandwich programme to process their results.
According to the council, Mr. Oyewunmi is found culpable of attempt to obtain money for himself as an inducement to carry out his duties, and consequently dismissed from the service of the university.
Mr. Adekoya said that the university established that Mr. Adeyemi-Suenu unilaterally altered the results of 12 students already advised to withdraw by Senate in the Department of History and International Studies in the 2015/2016 academic session.

“He changed their status from “withdrawn” to “good standing”. He also changed the results of some final year students and stragglers outside the scope of the departmental decision,” he said.
“Dr Adeyemi-Suenu also awarded grade point of 2.0 to two students in an examination which they were absent.
“This is tantamount to manipulation of students’ results in contravention of provisions of the Conditions and Scheme of Service for Senior Staff and therefore dismissed from the service of the university.”

ASUU: FG To Present Terms At Meeting Today

ASUU: FG To Present Terms At Meeting Today

Whether the ongoing strike by university lecturers will end soon or later will be known today as negotiators of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) meet today with the the federal government team.

Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu is expected to present the government’s position on the demands by the teachers.

ASUU is demanding the release of N1.3trillion revitalization funds to the universities in line with the agreement it reached with the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan.ASUU: Fed Govt to present terms at meeting today

About N220billion of the N1.3trillion was approved by the last administration and disbursed to the universities.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is finding it difficult to make any commitment on the balance of N1.080trillion because of the poor economic situation.

The lecturers are however adamant on the release of more of the revitalization/ intervention funds. They are also insisting on six other conditions.

These are: .That the Federal Government should immediately take over and accept payment of shortfall in salaries of universities; universities to manage their IGR the way they like and exemption from TSA; Exemption of Endowment Funds, JV cash from TSA; payment of University Salary Scale to teachers in primary schools in universities; release/implementation of guidelines for the retirement of Professors in line with 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement; and waiver/ government fiat to set up Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO).

It was learnt that Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Ayuba Wabba is facilitating the meeting which will be coordinated by Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Chris Ngige.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that although the Federal Government has conceded to some demands by the lecturers, ASUU felt the peace terms were not far-reaching.

The terms acceptable to the government border on approval of payment of N23b Earned Allowances; forensic audit of N30b earlier released as Earned Allowances; exemption of Endowment Funds and Joint Ventures cash only from Treasury Single Account; issuance of the right form by PENCOM for the registration of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO); and FG not going yet to National Industrial Court or IAP to resolve issues; allowing Wale Babalakin Committee to complete its assignment on FG-ASUU Agreement

The issues that may dominate talks today are:

Reopening of varsities while negotiation continues
FG’s take over and accept payment of shortfall in salaries of universities
Universities to manage their IGR the way they like and exemption from TSA
Payment of University Salary Scale to teachers in primary schools in universities
Release/implementation of guidelines for the retirement of Professors in line with 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement
Govt fiat to set up Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company(NUPEMCO)
Why ASUU should comply with labour laws in declaring strike action

A source said: “We want to hasten the negotiation in a cordial manner which will lead to the reopening of universities. This is why the government has not referred this matter to the National Industrial Court (NIC) or Industrial Arbitration Panel (IAP).

“The lecturers will have the opportunity of conditions acceptable to the government and those considered unrealistic like the exemption of universities from TSA.

“Except for Endowment Funds and JV cash, the government will not exempt universities from TSA. The basic aim of TSA is to check corruption in the management of scarce resources. The Ivory Tower should not be opposed to TSA at all. We won’t compromise this policy to please any group or institution.”

The source added that the government would present the hard facts on the nation’s economy and why there might not be immediate release of more part of the N1.3tr revitalization/ intervention funds for universities.

“The N1.3 trillion was intervention grant to public universities on the platform of National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) Assessment Programme.

“The administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2013 accepted to make the N1.3trillion available to the universities in six years beginning with the payment of about N200billion. Thereafter the government will provide N220billion in the budget for the remaining five years till 2018.

“As part of the process of raising funds for the N1.3trillion, it was agreed that ‘a dedicated revitalization account shall be opened at the Central Bank of Nigeria. Funds shall be paid into the account on quarterly basis from which the universities draw. FG shall then ensure that these funds will be ring-fenced.’ This was what Jonathan administration entered into with ASUU.

“The burden has been passed to the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. There is no way this administration can commit about N1trillion or N800billion or N220billion into the universities in the face of the economic situation of the country and competing needs.

“What the government will do is to put machinery in motion to reach an agreement with ASUU on how to remit these funds without hurting the economy.”

The top source also said the government will also open mutual discussion with ASUU over the union’s non-compliance with the labour laws in declaring any action.

“The varsity lecturers did not give notice of industrial action in line with the labour laws and the 1999 Constitution. Section 40 of the constitution creates unions and political parties.”

Dr. Ngige said yesterday: “We have invited ASUU back to the negotiation table. We are hopeful that the government and varsity lecturers will reach a compromise.

“We have some challenges in the university system which we will let ASUU appreciate. There are a lot of issues cropping up in the universities bordering financial indiscipline and misapplication of funds. We need the understanding of ASUU in cleaning the Augean Stable.

“The union is talking of shortfall but the lecturers do not know that the nominal rolls in many varsities have been padded. Some Vice Chancellors with their Registrars and Governing Councils employ through the back door without putting the personnel in the Integrated Personnel Payment Information System (IPPIS). They present different nominal rolls to the government and they now talk of shortfall in salaries.”

DELSU Sacks 10 Lecturers, 8 Junior Staff Over Extortion, Sexual Harassment -

DELSU Sacks 10 Lecturers, 8 Junior Staff Over Extortion, Sexual Harassment -

In what looks like a boost to the Federal Government’s anti-corruption crusade, the Governing Council of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has sacked 10 lecturers, eight non-teaching junior staff and warned 17 dons for extortion, sexual harassment and gross misconduct, among others.

This was made known on Friday on the website of the university, http://www.delsu.edu.ng/Dismissed-Staff., signed by the university Registrar and Secretary to the University’s Senate, Mr. Daniel Urhibo.

Most of the 17 teaching staff, who were reprimanded for Plagiarism, according to the statistics, were Readers in their various departments. Others were from the ranks of Assistant Lecturers to Senior Lecturers.

The decisions, the statement said, were taken based on recommendations made by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee (SSDC) to the university’s Governing Council after the institution’s 101st regular meeting held on Friday, 18th August, 2017 at the university premises.

Urhibo, in the statement, said the workers were allegedly thoroughly investigated by the SSDC and appropriately sanctioned based on the gravity of the crimes committed.

Three senior officers from the Bursary Department were also among workers dismissed from the service of the institution.

For instance, the Chief Accountant of the institution, Mr. Henry Etaverho Onovwiemore, was shown the way out for allegedly absconding from his duty post since 29th October, 2012.

Also, Mr. S.T. Orugboh, an Accountant II from the Bursary department, got his dismissal for also allegedly absconding from his duty post since October, 2012.

Not left out is the Provost of the Oleh Campus of DELSU, Prof. B.O. Okaba who is also of the Department of Political Science. He would no longer hold any position in the university for a duration of 5 years, beginning from November 2015.

Another professor from the Department of Agric Economics and Extension, who’s also Dean, Post Graduate School, Mrs. O.D. Ogisi, was removed from her position and given a strong warning.

The statement included several other workers found guilty of one infractions or the other with appropriate sanctions following.

About seven married women were among the 54 workers investigated as contained in the circular. However, two were discharged and acquitted.

For most of those whose appointments were terminated or who were dismissed from service, it took effect from November 15, 2017.

When contacted on phone, public relations officer of the institution, Mr Eddy Agbure, said he had been transferred from his position to the Senate, adding that he would send the number of the new image maker which he couldn’t do before filing the report.

Great Ways To Spend ASUU Strike Or Any Holiday Period -

Great Ways To Spend ASUU Strike Or Any Holiday Period -

It’s no longer news that ASUU has gone on strike. There’s no idea how short this will last but going by the news, expect another week.

Yeah, I can relate with how annoying the trend is. Take it from someone who’s sat at least a year of strike actions put together.

Looking on the bright side, ASUU strike does provides you extra time you can put to great use. This same can be said of other ‘holiday’ periods.

For this article, a holiday refers to anytime school is not in session. It may be semester breaks, strike actions or the unfortunate case of waiting a year to rewrite JAMB. It could also be the months of waiting for NYSC call up.

In any case, this time is valuable and you can’t afford to blow it away. There are tons of stuff you can do with this free time. Even if you may have misused some of this times in the past, this is one time to make things right. Here are 7 ways you can make the most of this period…

1. Intern or get a small-time job
This may be a great time to draft your CV and pitch yourself to employers. Already, there are a couple opportunities since the announcement of this strike.

Walk around your area, speak to older friends and colleagues. Actively, seek opportunities to improve on your work experience. The pay may be peanuts, but the experience is worth much more.

2. Join the family business
Some of us have ‘family businesses’. This the business our parents have been doing for some time. It can be a big-time company or a small supermart. Whichever one it is, it’s not a bad idea spending holiday working here. It’s one way to give back and also add to your professional experience.

3. Learn a new skill
I have an engineer friend who makes a living today from graphics design. He learnt it while we were in school. There’s almost no limit to the skills you can learn during holidays. If anything, start with learning basic and intermediate computer operations (if you don’t know that by now). Code schools are also popping up everywhere so you can join one. You can also join the growing community of Nigerian freelancers and hone your skills.

4. Be active in church, other groups
Refuse to be an onlooker anywhere you find yourself. Be a part of people who make things work. Join a group in church, your community, and be active in it. These experiences also contribute shaping the person you’ll be in the future.

5. Travel
There’s no harm in travelling if you can afford it. Travelling is also a form of learning. If you happen to have relations scattered around Nigeria and abroad, consider travelling. Life’s too short to not explore more places.

6. Read books
I don’t mean only course-related books. Take up a novel, read a book on investment, study Nigerian history, look up spiritual books. Read far and wide.

7. Have fun
Well, you still have to catch some fun. Plus, it’s perfectly okay to spoil yourself a little. You can binge watch your favourite TV series, play football, go to more events etc etc.

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, has released cut-off marks for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State, has released cut-off marks for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for candidates, who made FUNAAB their first choice institution, for the 2017/2018 Academic Session, following the recent policy meeting, chaired by the Honourable Minister of Education.

The University operates a Dual Cut-Off Point System for its agricultural programmes, which is fixed at 180 marks, while courses in Engineering, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine programmes are pegged at 200 marks. In other words, only candidates, who scored 180 and above for the agricultural programmes, as well as those who made 200 and above in Engineering, Sciences and Veterinary Medicine programmes are eligible to take part in the forthcoming Post-UTME Screening Exercise.

Consequently, candidates are advised to check for vital information, such as dates and other modalities for the Post-UTME on the University’s website: http://admission.unaab.edu.ng. They are also encouraged to visit the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s portal regularly, to track their admission status.

Candidates would be able to input their bio-data in the first week of September 2017. However, the University would not take responsibility for any misleading and fraudulent information, obtainable from any other website, apart from FUNAAB’s website. Furthermore, there would not be an extension of the closing date for the portal. Meanwhile, the 2017/2018 Admission Exercise would be based on the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS); a newly-introduced system by JAMB, which is designed to automate admission process into tertiary institutions.
