If we are to take a rundown of the resolutions of most people, we’d most
likely find reduction of spending, weight reduction. Focusing more on
self and exercising more in their list. But how many people add staying
happy at work to their resolutions? Your guess is as good as mine.
That however shouldn’t be the case because we spend a lot of time at work and being unhappy at work will not only affect your interactions with colleagues, affect your productivity but also inhibit personal development. As such, you may want to add staying happy at work to your list for the year.
Ensure that your aim is to focus more on developing your career and enjoying the time you spend at it. Here are a few things that will make you a jolly and happy fellow that will be successful at his/her job.
Have Boundaries
You make a point of pitching in while offering a helping hand is good, it is still important to set boundaries. Helping out a co-worker is normal and they are expected to do same for you when you’re in need. Saying “No” sometimes however is necessary even though it takes some effort. Set boundaries and find some time for your personal priorities and projects and you’d be incredibly surprised with how happy you’d be with yourself.
Be Early And Punctual
Being early and punctual are two things that can never be over emphasized but the truth is improving on these habits if you fall short on them can make a huge difference in both your professional and personal life.
You can achieve this by trying to wake up a little earlier. As a matter of fact, various research studies have shown that people who go to bed early and wake up early are more likely to be happier than those who don’t.
You can employ the use of an alarm if you don’t have one. Remember to set it a couple of minutes earlier so as to give you extra minutes to prepare. You’d be surprised at how effective it would be at making you get to work early and the overall effect it will have on your punctuality.
Be Sure Of When To Let Go
A lot of workplaces require you to work late and put in a lot of extra hours to cover up for a shortage of hands or excessive workload. While this is not a problem if it happens sparsely, it is however bad if it happens concurrently as it can affect your health and your mood.
Find a time that you can be done with work and do your best to stick to it. Doing this will help you make your actual work time a productive one and you can as well enjoy your free time having fun and staying happy.
Be Open
As much as saying “No” is important, opening up to people and agreeing to help them out by saying “Yes” is equally important. Help people out with their work tasks provided it’s not at your detriment.
For personal development, you should try adding to your skill sets by learning something new such as a skill or language. Engage in activities that will expose you to new things and also challenge the things you’ve known. This will stimulate both personal and professional growth.
Eat Well And Eat Right
A lot of workplaces don’t have good canteens and the foods that are usually available for consumption are snacks and drinks. You may want to turn this around by parking a healthy meal to work or finding a restaurant that sells good food. Either way, you’d be happy when you eat well as you you can stay off the mid-afternoon blood sugar crash and have more than enough energy to power you through the day.
